    This may be a stupid question, but how were the cells painted after this? I thought digital wouldn't be around till decades later.

    I wondered the same thing, and looked into it. I think they were referring to the inking process, and not painting, as it was reported. After this film, Disney released "101 Dalmations". This film used a Xerox process for getting the drawings onto the cels (thus the much looser line quality).

    The Xerox process meant that the animators' drawings could be copied straight onto cells instead of being traced by hand which took much more time.
