Perhaps Pascal hasn't quite explained himself in the way he intended, but the quote you included there is incredibly self important.

I think he was just referring to his technique. As in his lack of "outline" and the fact that the colored forms directly butt up against each other. And going from loose sketch to finish by coloring, with no clean up in-between. I didn't hear it in my mind as pretentious!

Well, like I said, maybe he hasn't explained himself properly, but unlike he suggests this is hardly a unique method of working.
