Buck is indeed a great character, due to his back story and his "insane moments." I've always seen mentally crazy characters as the center for killer comedy, which this guy has in spades. To add to it, he has some of the best animation in the movie with squashing, stretching and facial expressions that I completely marveled at. It's what made Horton Hears a Who such a visual treat for me.
The dinos were great as well, as you said, with too many designs to see all in one viewing. Some dinos are recognizable to a lot of people, while some may cause some to do some Google research - and that's why I think it works. I don't want to spoil this character for anyone, but if anyone knows what species (or elements of) that Rudy is modeled from, it would be really nice to know.
All in all, it's a really fun film to me. On a side note, anyone else think about the idea that Manny got to rebuild the family he once had? In the first movie, we see that he had a wife and child. Now he has those once again, which I thought was a great "full circle" concept.
